Reinforcement is where a certain stimulis or event happens because of an action or word. There's positive and negative reinforcement, and both are used when training, or modifying behavior.

Now sometimes when things are new, and when things seem to be going a little off course, you can use these behavior modification techniques on your sweetie to make everything smooth and fun!
Reinforcement is actually a much more reliable technique, unless your honey is a little bit slow... but give it a try, sometimes repetition gets the point across! You get a nickname that he thinks is sweet and you don't like, train it right out of him without being rude. Whenever he uses it, simply don't respond normally. Or ignore the sweetness. Then if he calls you something you DO happen to think is cute, then your response should be a positive one, with a reward of some type(small, a big smile, a return of some sweet name, you know)
You can also use reinforcement when it comes to hand holding, snuggling, kissing, conversation topics, Its a pretty simple concept, and pretty effective! Keep it small and see how that goes.
